Porcelain crowns mimic the beauty of natural teeth

A crown is a restoration that covers an entire tooth. For small cavities and defects, we use fillings. But fillings have their limitations, and when they are large, they don't hold up well, and can make the tooth susceptible to breaking.

The picture on the right shows an all-porcelain crown, which can be made so lifelike that it is impossible to tell it from a real tooth.

A beautiful porcelain crown on a front tooth

In dental school, dentists are taught to do porcelain fused to metal crowns on front teeth.

While these crowns may work well for back teeth, there are serious esthetic problems when they are placed on front teeth. Dr. Dustin Nelson prefers to do all porcelain crowns.

Here are some of the problems of the ordinary porcelain fused to metal crowns that most dentists use:

  • Because they have a metal foundation, they are opaque. Natural teeth have a beautiful translucency. You have probably seen friends that have porcelain fused to metal crowns on their front teeth, and you have noticed that they look fake.
  • Over time, they will develop a dark line at the gumline.
